Morto Piergiorgio Welby
Malato di distrofia muscolare, aveva chiesto l'eutanasia

Roma, 21 dic. - (Ign) - Marco Pannella ha annunciato la morte di Piergiorgio Welby durante la diretta di Radio Radicale. Welby aveva 61 anni e da quaranta era malato di distrofia muscolare. Aveva chiesto l'eutanasia al presidente Napolitano lo scorso settembre. Poche ore prima del decesso il Consiglio Superiore della Sanità aveva negato lo spegnimento del respiratore perché "non c'era accanimento terapeutico".

La distrofia muscolare che lo ha costretto ad una vita da lui stesso definita inaccettabile, aveva colpito Piergiorgio Welby all'età di 20 anni. Da allora, la malattia è peggiorata, lentamente ma inesorabilmente. Di papà scozzese (fu giocatore in serie A nella Roma), Welby aveva molteplici interessi: appassionato di caccia e di cani, ha fatto studi classici. Nato a Roma il 26 dicembre 1945 è stato colpito da una forma di distrofia muscolare progressiva. Nell'ultima fase della malattia, Welby era costretto a letto inibito a qualsiasi movimento di tutto il corpo, ad eccezione dei movimenti oculari e labiali. La sua sopravvivenza era assicurata esclusivamente da un respiratore automatico al quale era stato collegato nel 1997.
